When I Get My Hands On You by The New Basement Tapes MP3 Download
The New Basement Tapes is a supergroup featuring Elvis Costello, Rhiannon Giddens, Taylor Goldsmith, Jim James and Marcus Mumford, and When I Get My Hands On You is a folk-rock love song built from Bob Dylan’s previously unreleased lyrics.
When I Get My Hands On You has a warm, rootsy arrangement led by simple keyboard, shimmering guitars, restrained drums and plucked strings. Marcus Mumford handles the lead vocal with a clear, expressive delivery, giving the romantic lyrics a direct quality while the instrumentation stays deliberately uncluttered.
Released in 2014, the track appeared on Lost On the River: The New Basement Tapes, produced by T Bone Burnett. The project was created around lyrics Bob Dylan wrote during the 1960s, with the musicians composing new music for the rediscovered words. The album was released by Electromagnetic Recordings and Harvest.
The simple keyboard figure is one of the song’s defining musical details, providing a steady foundation beneath Mumford’s vocal while the guitars and strings add colour around it. That restrained arrangement keeps the focus on the words rather than turning the performance into an oversized rock production.
When I Get My Hands On You captures the spirit of The New Basement Tapes project by pairing Dylan’s archival writing with a fresh ensemble performance. Its folk-rock character, expressive vocal and understated arrangement give the song a timeless quality.
